The news about Hanta virus  comes at a time when scientist and medical experts are already racing against time to find a cure for pandemic COVID-19.
Infection with Hanta virus disease such as :-
Hanta virus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) & Hemorrhagic Fever with  renal Syndrome (HFRS).
Hanta virus divided into 2 groups:-
New world- Hanta virus in Americas
Old world- Hanta virus in Europe and Asia.

Hanta virus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) is caused by  a virus found in some rodents , primarily deer mice.
A person may become infected with the virus through direct or indirect contact with the saliva, urine or droppings of an infected rodents.
 Infection may result in severe respiratory distress and hypotension.
  The causes  of disease was quickly identified as a novel member of the family of Hanta viruses originally named for the river (Hantaan) in South Korea where the prototype was discovered.

The Hantaan serotype viruses cause severe Hemorrhagic Fever with kidney involvement and are found in Korea, China and Estern Russia.
The new disease (discovered in the South West U.S.), is called the "Hanta Virus Pulmonary Syndrome"
The first case of HPS in Texas was also reported in 1983.

Causes Hanta Virus:-

When heathy person inhale urine, saliva, poop of infected rodents such as deer mice, cotton rats, rice rats etc.

If you have broken skin and dropplets of a deer mice touch it, you are likely to have Hanta virus.

How Hanta virus infect human?


1. Virus found in rodent's feces urine saliva.
2. Infected droppings becomes airborne
3. Inhaled by human
4. Acute respiratory distress             (serious infection)


Symptoms of Hanta virus


Early symptoms of HPS are much like symptoms of flu.
(First 3-7 days)

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Body ache
  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach pain
  • Dry cough
  • Rapid onset of sever respiratory failure
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Diarrhoea


Characteristics of Hanta virus:-
1. Mostly prevelent in rural areas.
2. Cannot be spread between humans.

In it's early stage , Hanta virus is difficult to distinguish from influenza, pneumonia and other viral condition.

How Hanta virus is different from the Corona virus?

Corona virus spread from person to person, but Hanta virus spread from rodents to human,If someone touches their eyes , nose or mouth after touching rodents droppings, urine or nesting materials.
